Eternals introduced a plethora of interesting characters into the MCU, and one of them is Gemma Chan’s Sersi. The film, directed by Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao, follows the story of a group of cosmic-powered immortals who are sent to Earth to protect humans from Deviants. Aside from Chan, Eternals features an all-star cast that includes Angelina Jolie, Kit Harington, Richard Madden, and Lauren Ridloff.
In the film, Sersi became the team’s leader after the unfortunate death of Salma Hayek’s Ajak. Sersi’s newfound responsibility led to a discussion about the Eternals’ true mission for Arishem since it placed Earth in danger due to an event called the Emergence.
This event brings forth the birth of a powerful Celestial named Tiamut, but it would cause the destruction of Earth in the process. After an intense showdown among the Eternals, the cosmic team managed to unite in saving the world through Sersi’s leadership.
However, Eternals’ ending showed that Sersi, along with Kingo and Phastos, was taken by Arishem to parts unknown, leaving fans to question their fates in the larger MCU.
Now, a new interview has shed some light on Sersi’s future in the Marvel universe.
Sersi Set for MCU Return After Eternals
Eternals star Gemma Chan, who played Sersi in the MCU film, sat down with W Magazine to tease her upcoming Marvel return.
Chan first discussed Sersi’s MCU costume, admitting that it was “much more confining” than her previous wardrobe in 2019’s Captain Marvel where she played Kree Warrior Minn-Erva:
“The latex was comfortable! My costume in the Marvel Universe was much more confining. But still far easier than my first time in the Marvel Universe, when I was famously painted blue in Captain Marvel.”
When the discussion moved to Eternals, Chan was asked if she liked playing a god in the movie. The Crazy Rich Asians actress pointed out that it was “interesting” and “fun:”
“It was interesting. In Eternals, she starts out shy and then discovers her power as a leader. That was fun.”
Lastly, Chan confirmed that fans will see Sersi again down the line (replying “Yes” when asked if she “will… play Sersi again”), jokingly adding that “Marvel owns us for life.”
What’s Next for Gemma Chan’s Sersi?
Gemma Chan’s latest comments suggest that Sersi is a huge part of the MCU’s future, and this claim makes sense due to the character’s history from the pages of Marvel Comics.
In the comics, Sersi became a member of the Avengers alongside Dane Whitman aka Black Knight. This backstory could happen in the MCU, considering Sersi’s love for humans and that she already established a bond with Kit Harington’s Dane.
At this stage, the Avengers needs new heroes into the fold after losing Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man and Chris Evans’ Captain America. Given Sersi’s experience in leading the Eternals combined with her comprehensive knowledge of Earth, many would agree that Chan’s MCU character is a likely candidate for the next slot among the ranks of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
As for Chan’s next MCU project, the most plausible one is a potential Eternals sequel, considering the first film’s ending. Sersi, Kingo, and Phastos all need to be rescued by the remaining Eternals first to continue their respective MCU adventures.
Eternals director Chloé Zhao already teased a potential sequel to the 2021 MCU blockbuster, while Thena star Angelina Jolie might have accidentally spoiled its development during the film’s worldwide premiere. That said, things are looking bright for the cosmic-powered group.
Eternals will premiere on Disney+ on January 12, 2022.
