Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is just over a week away, and fans are on the edge of their seats with anticipation. The upcoming Marvel Studios project is set to take a deep dive into the many realities that make up existence. Alongside Benedict Cumberbatch’s titular hero, Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch, Benedict Wong’s Sorcerer, and Xochitl Gomez’s America Chavez will be joining the fray.
Wong has seen an expanded role in the MCU recently. As of Spider-Man: No Way Home, the character was revealed to be the Sorcerer Supreme—a role lost to Stephen Strange thanks to being blipped.
On top of saving existence in the upcoming film, the sorcerer has, and will likely be, a busy man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings he can be seen overseeing Abomination, and if rumors are true, he’ll be popping up for a notable role in She-Hulk.
So who would the actor want to interact with next? Well, the X-Men seem to be pretty high on his list.
Benedict Wong Dreams of Crossovers
In an interview with JOE.ie, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness star Benedict Wong was asked which character in the MCU he would love to crossover with whom he hasn’t already.
The actor’s response was more varied than one might expect, as he was quick to say “Samuel L. Jackson,” before stating that he’d “like to hang out with the X-Men,” specifically noting X-Force and Nightcrawler. Wong also name-dropped the Secret Wars storyline, which featured the Mutants in its original event:
“Oh wow… I’d love to work with the Samuel L. Jackson… which other worlds are we… I mean, if ever the X-Men are around, I’d like to hang out with the X-Men… I’m a big Marvel comic fan back in the day and obviously, I always remembered the Secret Wars, where everybody was involved… Who else? X-Force, Nightcrawler, all of those. What I love about this and I thank the MCU… [I have] portal world travel… so the more, the merrier.”
Nick Fury, X-Men, Secret Wars, Oh My!
It’s clear how Wong is more than hopeful to remain in the MCU for a long time. Fingers crossed that he survives Multiverse of Madness first.
Out of the bunch, Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury would probably end up being first. After all, the Sorcerer Supreme would definitely be on the list of people the world’s top spy would want to know about—assuming, of course, that Wong keeps the title.
As for folks like the X-Men or X-Force, well that would undoubtedly be exciting. The emergence of the X-Gene into the MCU’s ecosystem should be more than enough reason for the sorcerer to need to investigate. Though, fans might be getting their first taste of that with Patrick Stewart in the upcoming Strange movie.
Then there’s Secret Wars. Whispers indicate the event will be the next Avengers: Endgame-level crossover event. Even the Russo Brothers are interested in helming it. So, provided the sorcerer is still around, it’s safe to assume that Wong will make an appearance.
All of the jokes are right—it could easily become the Wong Cinematic Universe.
Wong will return to the MCU when Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hits theaters on May 6.
